Abstract

This theoretical paper explores the integration of Salsa dance into dance/movement therapy as a culturally responsive and identity-affirming framework for working with transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) individuals. Grounded in Afro-Caribbean and Latinx traditions, Salsa offers a rich foundation for examining how movement practices can support embodied healing, community connection, and the reclamation of bodily autonomy. Drawing from multicultural, trauma-informed, and affirming care perspectives, this work proposes adaptations of traditional Salsa structures to dismantle rigid gender norms and foster inclusive therapeutic environments for TGNC communities. Particular emphasis is placed on creating group structures that protect emotional safety while encouraging curiosity, fluidity, and authentic expression. By offering a theoretical foundation for integrating Salsa into dance/movement therapy, this work contributes to broader conversations about affirming approaches, rooted in cultural appreciation, to therapeutic movement practices.
