Abstract

Rituals play a vital role in fostering emotional safety, connection, and transformation within dance/movement therapy sessions for couples. This paper explores how ritualized movement experiences create a structured and symbolic container for relational healing. Drawing from somatic psychology, attachment theory, and embodied practices, the use of rituals, such as synchronized breathing, mirroring, intentional touch, and co-created dances, supports the regulation of the nervous system, deepens nonverbal communication, and enhances intimacy. Rituals also serve to mark transitions, embody repair, and reinforce shared meaning within the therapeutic process. Through these embodied practices, couples can access new pathways for connection, co-regulation, and emotional expression, ultimately cultivating a deeper, more resilient relational bond.
