Abstract

This thesis, Navigating Conflict in the Classroom: Fostering Autonomy and Emotional Resilience through Effective Conflict Resolution Strategies, explores the crucial role that conflict plays in early education. Rooted in personal teaching experiences and observations over the course of the Art of Teaching program, this work examines how children can develop in times of emotional struggle in the classroom. This thesis opens the discussion of how conflict can be used as a powerful tool that creates learning opportunities, entry points, and socio-emotional development, rather than causing disruptions. It explores conflict and conflict resolution in the classroom, and goes deep into examining themes of conflict conjoined with root causes. Resolution strategies are explored in-depth, with a close look on how effective ones can foster two crucial aspects of development: autonomy and emotional resilience in children. This thesis concludes with practical proposals for what teachers can do to best support students through moments of conflict, giving students the tools they need to navigate challenges with confidence, kindness, and respect. Educators have an incredible opportunity to shape not just academic minds, but emotionally intelligent, empathetic, resilient young people.
