Abstract
Current prenatal genetic testing guidelines recommend providing patients with detailed information to allow informed decisions about screening and diagnostic testing, however studies show that expecting all healthcare providers who work with prenatal patients to be well versed in the risks and benefits of potential prenatal genetic testing techniques may be unrealistic. Based on the validated efficacy of computerized tools and educational videos for educating patients on complex health concepts, we have developed a preliminary version of a tool to educate prenatal patients on their genetic testing options. Our study looked at participants’ understanding of prenatal testing options after watching the educational video and showed that the video increased overall prenatal testing knowledge. Participants also gave feedback on their level of satisfaction with the video and their opinion of its effectiveness and accessibility. Most participants felt the video was informative and that if they were pregnant or planning on becoming pregnant, the video would help them make informed decisions about prenatal testing. This study identifies methods of improving our tool and indicates that an educational tool can improve informed decision making among prenatal patients.
